I'm not sure if it's just my connection down here or not. I've tried installing rune on my other friend's computers and they have the same problem. The internet just cuts off randomly and sometimes won't let the servers list refresh. I have no firewalls on my computer at all. It sometimes lasts for 2-4 hours but then the internet connection just cuts off. After I exit out of rune I can get the internet to work for internet explorer/firefox as well as other games just only when I run rune does the internet stop. I'm not sure how to fix this problem because all the other full screen games on my computer don't do this only rune does. Any ideas as to how I can fix this problem? I go through Comcast broadband.

it could be a couple of things

1. if you're on a router you may have to open up ports
2. double check to see that your internet connection coincides with your rune connection (multi-player --> player --> connection)
although setting it to 'lan, isdn, cable' works fine with any type of connection that you may have
3. make sure all the cables are secured and tightened properly (common mistake)
4. sometimes but very rarely the weather can affect you're connection
5. if you're running an anti-virus software such as Norton make sure you 'allow' connection for rune
6. this might be a stretch but if you're running AOL instant messenger it has a big impact on video game performance especially connection speed

if all else fails contact your service provider and ask questions, tell them you've been have unstable connection problems

what type of connection do you have?

Try using a continuous ping to see if it's really connected to Rune.

START > RUN

Type in: cmd

type in ping -t www.yahoo.com

That will run a continuous ping.  The result times should be under 100ms.  Mine are in the 50s.  You shouldn't be having any time outs.  If you are, reboot your PC and power-cycle any hubs, modems, routers, etc.

Let it the ping run for awhile both with Rune off, and with it on.

If it does in fact only happen when Rune is running, I would probably try a System Restore back to a time before the problem existed, to see if that clears it up.  It's possible some new piece of software or a Windows update is conflicting with Rune, but that doesn't seem very likely.

On a side note, it's important that you have a firewall.  If you have a router, it may include a firewall.  If not, I highly recommend you install at least a software firewall.

Broadband is my connection through wireless to my room. How would I go about opening the ports if they were the problem?

If you have the same ports open as what runegame.com says you should, then you should be OK as far as that goes, if the router is working like it's supposed to.

One thing - did you power-cycle the modem, router and computer?  Modem first, then router, then computer.  Be sure and leave everything off for a minute or more.

Regarding your ping tests... you can let them run constantly, and hit CTRL-C to stop the test.  It will then report to you how much packet loss you're having.  One timeout every once in awhile doesn't equal the type of failure you seem to be reporting.  Since you can play for 2-4 hours without problems, it may take awhile to see if the ping test times out when the problem starts.

You can also start a test while Rune is running, then minimize Rune and look at the test when you start having problems.  If you see frequent or constant timeouts, and then you close rune completely and the timeouts stop, then yes, rune is probably your problem.

Another thing you can do when you are having timeouts is to ping the router and see if you have timeouts to it, too.    If your pings to it are flawless, which they should be, then the problem isn't likely to be with your computer. It's more likely to be your ISP (assuming connections to the router and modem are good, and that they are working correctly).

You might also post about this at runegame.com - see if anyone thinks Rune is the cause of the problem.  That seems the least likely thing, to me.

It's been working perfectly the last few days, so I'm guessing the problem is fixed. If it starts again I will be sure to reply to this thread again. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Here's the ping statistics while playing rune.

Hello, my connection is still timing out on me when I'm playing rune. I took a screen shot of it timing out pinging the rov server here. Maybe someone could offer me more suggestions? I've unblocked some ports. Maybe I need to unblock more?
